I simply finished this book a few hours ago. To be able to give some background, I've been watching the Wings religiously since the 96-97 season as that put me personally around 10 years old at the time. I actually grew up watching McCarty playing as well as all of those other legends who have donned with Winged Wheel over the years. It had been very insightful and fascinating to know McCarty's full story as told by him. A lot of it reminded me of Tommy Lee's autobiography with the rock star lifestyle riddled with infidelity, drugs and irresponsible drinking. Not comparing the two, but they've led very similar lives despite different career paths. I am WAY more of a Red Wings fan than a Motley Crue lover, so I found this book a LOT more interesting.

This book was everything I expected and wished it would be. It had been funny at times, sad at times and just downright outlandish yet believable at times. I think there are a lot of important lessons to draw from this book on what NOT to do. I actually wouldn't recommend this to anyone looking to model themselves after the selections Darren has turned but I actually would heartily recommend this to any tough guy hockey player, aspiring top prospect or hardcore Reddish Wings fan. The book goes by quick. I actually read the first 70 webpages in a sitting and then the remainder in another sitting. I simply couldn't put it down once I started. I highly recommend this book!, Picked upwards this book because I actually remembered getting thinking about hockey therefore of seeing McCarty's amazing breakaway goal to win the Stanley Mug in 1997. I was not into sports, but even I knew it was a thing of beauty! Read this in 2 sittings. Interesting guy. It's written very stream of consciousness style, so can be hard to follow at times. I sincerely hope he's doing ok these days (2017): -), Wow. I read the whole book in one sitting. It felt like I had gone to be able to dinner with Darren and told me his life story. He was always one of my favorite hockey players, having been a joy to watch on the ice. After reading this it makes me love him even more. I actually never really knew the struggle he faced- and it's heartbreaking- from the viewpoint of his family not supporting him thru his disease. It's a life long struggle, and I actually am very happy they have found someone who will manage him. I wish you simply love and happiness throughout your life Darren- I hope sooner or later to hear you on radio stations or see you on TV again talking about hockey, you were very good at it before and am hope you get scooped up locally again: ), The life of an NHL Tough Guy is not easy. Darren McCarty's story is no different. He lived the life of Sex, drugs, rock and roll and ok last one hockey. He has a lot of stories to tell rather than many of them are on the ice. Almost all of the book deals with his life before the NHL and with his life outdoors of the rink as a possible NHL enforcer, but I actually felt that it was really lacking on stories dealing with his time playing hockey. He shares a few stories concerning some of his Detroit Reddish Wings teammates and opponents but for the most part he is concentrated on the events going on off the ice.

I recommend this book for anyone that might be coping with person fighting drug abuse issues because his story might help to understand what is going on in the person's life., If you are a die-hard hockey fan, or a casual follower, you will need this book. In addition, you will gain a perspective of Darren McCarty, which will show you Darren as a person, not just a hockey player. He has experienced the spotlight and has also humbled himself. Even though I actually have never experienced the limelight, I feel like I could easily sit down down with Darren and talk about life and the encounters we certainly have in common. I can relate to a lot of his situations off the ice. Anyway, kudos to Darren for the courage to convey himself in a candid way. I actually can appreciate him even more so than I actually had before. Good fortune Darren, rock on, brother!, This is a very good read, but I actually am a lttle bit biased being a wings fan during McCarty's prime. Either way, the book takes a great look inside the career of 1 of the more interesting players of times. As 1 of the last true hard guys in the NHL, McCarty guides readers through the ups and lows of his career, and provides a great look into many aspects of both his, and the Reddish Wings, history that a lot of followers have not been privy to. The chapters recounting the Colorado rivalry, each Stanley Cup run, and McCarty's person battles with habit provide some great good examples of what life was like during one of the most successful eras in the NHL., I really liked the book foremost because I'm a huge McCarty fan/Red Wing fan. But I've read other sports activity autobiographies in the past and been disappointed. McCarty delivered because of his in your face, tell it like it is subject matter. Loved the detail of his Red Side stories. My favorite was in the accommodation with Kocur, Drapes and Yzerman and the 'wrestling' match. Classic. I can only hope that the next book McCarty writes include more hockey stories (on and off the ice)., I have always been a hockey fan, and especially the Detroit Red Wings! Darren was always a popular player because, not only was he a very good player, but because of his humor and conversation with the team. I actually always felt badly that his addictions were " out there".
He seemed to have a great rapport with his stepfather, and he includes all of that in his book. It was easy reading, and I am happy for him that he seems to have found the internal Darren, the true one. I actually wish him all the best,
