This is really an in-depth study of British middle-class society throughout the years when Austen was writing her novels. The entire world was watching the French Revolution and the rapid rise of the brash Us republic, but England was undergoing changes of her own with the expansion of the middle class and their social and financial ambitions. Some history of the Austen family is available (mostly contributed by Jane's niece and nephew) and these facts are woven to the narrative whenever possible. For anyone who is interested in England and in social history, this guide is a keeper., My, my how times have changed! Dining and food played a serious different role in the lives of the middle class and the wealthier classes during the Regency Era in the uk. What was served was important and how it was prepared and offered up on the dining room table had that means back then. Food and food service was often very different from the modern meals, especially when guests dined with families back in the early on 1800's. It was also interesting to me how the timing of meals and of " tea" throughout the day could carry such importance. And also that well brought up young females like Lizzie and Emma, hardly ever had anything to do with food preparation. Their own involvement with that mostly consisted of getting a " menu" for the day and giving that information to the housekeeper or cook. In " G & P", Mrs. Bennett actually takes quite a little of pride in the fact that HER daughters (unlike Charlotte Lucas) had nothing to do with " kitchen activities". This provides her daughters, like Lizzie and Jane, more social status because of their lack of involvement with food. I really loved reading this book, as it was like a little window back in time that gave me the idea of what daily life was like for women of the era. Life revolved a great deal around dining properly in the past. It made me wonder the actual Bennett family and Mr, Darcy would think of eating in todays world full of fast food drive up windows! Additionally, it made me wonder what Regency time families would think of all the modern " Foodies" out there today who enjoy viewing programs like " The Chew" and who truly like to cook also to to move up their sleeves and prepare healthy foods and gourmet meals. They would probably just shake their heads in wonder at that. A big " Thumbs Up" for this informative and entertaining guide!, With the intention to full disclosure, I actually admit I'm a Her Austin fan. But Now i'm also interested in social historical past. For Jane Austin followers, this wonderful book provides marvelous insight into how Austin makes use of food in her work and in some of the mechanics of her writing. As another reviewer said, " the light light went off. "
For those interested in social history, the marvelous and broad description of food, it's relationship to how the day was separated, its treatment by successive generations, its storage, vehicles, etc ., etc., provides clear insight into how society was organized.
" Academic" subjects like this are all too much addressed by professors who obfuscate the paucity of their information by dense and inaccessible prose. Not here. This is very, very well-written and a pleasure to read., This can be a great addition to my library of books about the social history of the Regency-I enjoyed reading it and learned a lot., The author did a good job making this interesting and information packed. It opened a whole new section of Her Austen thought for me., I actually enjoyed reading this guide. A reader who is not really acquainted with AUSTEN 's works will most likely get much less from it than even a everyday Austen enthusiast. Obviously, the author has done a great deal of research, and makes good use of source material. The design is overtly similar to educational presentations, which some readers may notenjoy., Great guide. Well researched and academic. Written in an easy to read style. Provides fresh information into Austen's characters as well as the life of women of her times., The recipes and the amount of labor included in their preparation reveal so much about Overlook Austin's world. We have enjoyed making many of the recipes, albeit with modern equipment. I recommend this guide for all of Miss Austin's gentle readers.
